Couriers don't just charge by weight — a big, light box takes up space they could sell, so they also work out a volumetric weight. This dimensional weight calculator multiplies length × width × height (cm) and divides by a divisor — commonly 5000 for air/express or 6000 for many couriers — to get the volumetric weight in kg. The billable weight is then the greater of the actual and volumetric weights.
If your product is bulky and light, you'll be charged by volume, not the scale — so shrinking the box or choosing a courier with a higher divisor can cut shipping cost noticeably. Check the divisor in your carrier's contract; it varies by service and region.
