Free video frame extractor

You need one still image out of a video — a thumbnail, a product shot from a clip, the frame where the label is finally readable, proof of something that happened for eight frames. The usual answer is to pause and hit screenshot, and the usual result is disappointing. This frame extractor takes the decoded frame itself: a 4K video hands you a 3840×2160 PNG, with no player controls in the picture and none of the softness your screen scaling adds.

Why a screenshot is worse than it looks

A screenshot captures your display, not the video. If a 4K clip is playing in a 700-pixel-wide player, your screenshot is 700 pixels wide — the other 3,140 pixels of real detail are thrown away before you ever press the key. You also get the play button, the scrub bar and the watermark baked in. Reading the frame off the video element skips all of that and gives you the original pixels.

Step to the exact frame — and an honest note about that

Dragging the scrubber gets you close; the frame step buttons get you exactly there. Here is the honest part: browsers do not expose a video's true frame rate, so stepping works by nudging the playback position by one frame's worth of time — which is why you choose 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps above. Pick the one your video was shot at and each click lands on the next frame. Pick the wrong one and you will occasionally step twice or land on the same frame; the preview always shows what you actually captured. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is no file size limit.

Why not just screenshot?
A screenshot captures your screen at display size with player controls in it. This reads the decoded frame — full resolution, nothing on top.

Which formats work?
